City, Parks Officials Make Appeal to Save Summer Celebration Fireworks Show

Cut from the city budget in 2010, generous sponsorship donations by Farmers New World Life, the Mercer Island Community Fund and private individuals saved the show in 2011.

City Hall and the Mercer Island Parks & Recreation Department are once again soliciting community support again this year to put on the traditional free Summer Celebration! Firework show on Saturday, July 14, 2012.   The fireworks show is a fantastic display set off from a barge in Lake Washington near Luther Burbank Park. Last year, over 7,000 attendees watched from the park at a festival that includes food vendors, inflatable toys, activities for children, and live musical entertainment. Generous sponsorship donations by Farmers New World Life, the Mercer Island Community Fund and private individuals saved the show in 2011. Unfortunately this year’s event is in jeopardy of being cancelled again due to budgetary cut-backs unless $23,000 …

Dancing Words: Mercer Island Novelist is Bringing Ballet to Bookshelves

Miriam Wenger-Landis' two ballet-themed novels are helping to create a new genre for an untapped market.

A few years after Mercer Island’s Miriam Wenger-Landis’ career as a professional ballerina came to an end she looked back on what had been an intense, complex experience and decided that it would make for an interesting story, one that could enlighten and inspire young readers and aspiring dancers. That story became Girl in Motion, a fictional tale about a young girl’s experiences at a New York dance school. Published in 2010, Girl in Motion was the realization of a dream for Wenger-Landis and an early entry in the burgeoning genre of dance-themed fiction.  Now Wenger-Landis has published a second book, Breaking Pointe, a continuation of young dancer Anna Linado’s adventures in the highly competitive and complicated world of ballet. But …

Your Photos Could Help Tell Mercer Island's Story

Local author seeking photos for pictorial history book.

As part of an Arcadia Publishing project - a publisher known for their local pictorial history books - Mercer Island resident and author Priscilla Padgett is seeking photo contributions for a planned Mercer Island edition. Padgett is looking for photos that capture the varied history of Mercer Island through the years. Examples include pictures from civic organizations, scenes from around town, scenes of landmarks, outdoor photography and school pictures. Padgett says that other historical items are also of interest, like memorabilia, ticket stubs, posters, advertising, newspaper clipping, postcards and ferry schedules. Anything that could help tell Mercer Island's story going back to the early 1900s. Padgett needs the images to be of high…

Graphic Novels: Not Just for Superhero Fans

Graphic novels have become more than "just" comics and superhero stories. They can be factual, biographical or simply stunning works of art that tell a story.

I recently attended my very first Emerald City ComicCon. In spite of my library geek nature, I never thought to go to a comic convention before. I thought comic conventions were just for the superhero crowd. This was all before I discovered the rich world of graphic novels. Graphic novels have become more than "just" comics and superhero stories. They can be factual, biographical or simply stunning works of art that tell a story. Graphic novels are wonderful and I’d like to share some of my favorites for all ages. All these titles can be found in the King County Library System. Kids Owly: The Way Home & The Bittersweet Summer by Andy Runton. The "Owly" series are nearly wordless graphic novels that are perfect for little ones. Reminiscent …

MIHS Drama's 'Our Town' Opens May 3

The Mercer Island High School Drama Department presents Thornton Wilder's classic and sentimental meta-play, May 3-5 and May 10-12.

If lavish dramatic productions are a celebration of style over substance, the Mercer Island High School Drama Department's spring play Our Town is an effort to bring the art of acting and imagination back to center-stage. Directed by Mercer Island High School Drama teacher Daniela Melgar and opening Thursday, May 3, Thornton Wilder's famous meta-play tells the story of day-to-day life: the choices we make, the dreams we have, the people we love, and the things we take for granted. Featuring Kareya Sylversof (as Stage Manager), Kaya McRuer (as Emily Webb) and Peter Litzow (playing George Gibbs) in leading roles, the sentimental and poignant play is set in a small town at the turn of the twentieth century — on a largely empty stage and …
