The Proposed Library Remodel eliminates the skylight that so well lights the interior. A greatRead Moredesig n by the original top-flight architects- Ibsen Nelson and Myron Lewis. JG

Even worse than removing a useful skylight, the remodel priorities are all wrong. First theRead Morecollecti on space and shelf "requirements" need to be properly set. The MI Library current poor collection content is simply a disgrace to this community. The money FIRST needs to be spent on improving the collection, and then on identifying facility needs to support that collection (reference shelf type and space), and only then on REQUIRED short and long term maintenance items or seismic upgrade items for "Shelter in place". Any other money spent is an utter and complete waste, when the community has far more pressing needs, and when our Council is foolishly and unnecessarily planning to even raise more MI taxes (e.g., via TBD Car Tabs). Regarding the south end fire station, we just had another Richter 7.5 in Mexico, it is long overdue here, and even the foolish cinder block construction of the "New" and wasteful south end fire station (versus other better alternatives) is indicative of another Council led debacle.

As usual Tom- you've put your finger on the main issue of this unwise, unneeded redo/disruption ofRead Moreo ur MI community library which has served so many of us all these years. The thing to do is make the small updates needed with minimal disruption. JG-

There's long been a big difference between MI "Spec" homes & those carefully designed Read Moreand skillfully built to fit the site- and the personal needs of the Owners. It's not just looks but also ease of maintenance and/or upkeep.JG-

This was a remodel of an existing waterfront home. There are still a number of these on MercerRead MoreIslan d. Before buying one of these, do be sure to consult with an experienced residential architect such as myself. Although retired, I am available for this kind of expert work. Looking at the "Spec" Homes being put up and offered for sale is rather dismaying. ItRead Morewoul d seem good home designers are in short supply these days. Or perhaps Developers are simply not hiring them. In any case, what's being skillfully built- are not being well designed. How unfortunate. Our Mercer Island deserves lots better JG-

I'm very sympathetic to the need of our local business's to attract customers but the far too manyRead Mores igns around have really become an awful plague. Just a few- would be OK. How to limit or control these all over? JG-
Jerry Gropp Architect AIA April 17, 2014 at 08:45 PM
The way to handle these signs would be to have City employees collect any they see. JG-

I guess seeing this set me off. This would result in a far less attractive and functional MIRead MoreLibrary that we have all come to love and appreciate. A bit of fine-tuning could be done- without closing down the Libe- and/or moving the collection. (Spend the money saved on more books). JG-
