City Recycling Event & Rain Barrel Sale Set for Oct. 26

A convenient way to dispose of non-landfill items like alkaline, rechargeable, and cellphone batteries, mattresses, and styrofoam.

Safely dispose of the old equipment and household items that are cluttering your basement or garage at the Mercer Island Autumn Recycling Event on Saturday, October 26th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mercer Island Boat Launch.

The community event is a chance to safely dispose of old equipment and household items cluttering basements and garages. The City reminds all recyclers that only certain items can be accepted at the event. For a complete list of these items, click here.

In addition to promoting conservation through the recycling collection at the City boat Launch, the City of Mercer Island is also trying to help residents use water more efficiently by selling rain barrels on the same day at City Hall.

These high-quality rain barrels are being made available to City residents at a reduced cost. The rain barrels normally retail for about $120, but residents will pay only $25, cash only. Quantities are limited and will be sold only on Oct. 26 while supplied last.

Computers and monitors are not accepted at the recycling event, however, Mercer Island has a permanent E-Cycle Washington location at 7835 SE 30th Street for recycling these items as well as televisions, laptops, and e-readers. (Contact: 206-230-8188)

As always, staff from Mercer Island Youth and Family Services will be on site accepting donations for the Food Pantry. Cash or non-perishable food items are appreciated. The Food Pantry serves only Island residents and has seen its use nearly triple in the past four years.
