COVENANT WELCOMES NEW PASTOR

After a nine month search, on Sunday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m. the Rev. Peter Sung will be commissioned as the new Lead Pastor of the Mercer Island Covenant Church, 3200 78th Avenue SE.  The public is invited.

In 1981, Peter Sung immigrated as a child from South Korea to New York City. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and received his Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Associating with the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1999, he was ordained in 2006.

Sung’s work includes “planting” six new churches in a 12-year period before serving the East Coast Conference as the Associate Superintendent and the Evangelical Covenant Church as the Director of Church Planting.

Mercer Island Covenant Church, founded in 1949, began in a family recreation room on North Mercer Way, moved for a period of time to the VFW Hall, and built its first unit where the Mercer Island Post Office is now located. The present worship facility across the street from Mercerdale Park was dedicated in the spring of 1974.

Peter and his wife, Susie, have four young daughters. The three oldest are now attending West Mercer Elementary School.
