Islanders Give $6,000 at Parks & Rec Holiday Fundraiser

Islanders joined into the spirit of giving by donating money, goods and services to raise money for Mercer Island Parks and Recreation special events.

The Mercer Island Parks & Recreation Department announced it had raised $6,000 to help pay for family special event in 2013.

"Dessert Before Dinner!" event featured music by Island students and music teachers from both Musical Mind Studio (including Connie Wible, Brittany Kohl and harpist Leslie McMichael) and Mercer Island Music (including guitarist Scott Williams and composer/instructor Debby Boland Watt).

Dessert was provided by students from Newport High School's Culinary Arts Program, who were on hand to cut and serve the professionally made cakes and pastries.

Holiday shopping in the form of a silent auction was also available to raise money for the community events.

Money raised at the fundraiser will help pay for the city's annual "special events", such as Mercer Island Summer Celebration, the Holiday Tree Lighting and Firehouse Munch, and the Mercerdale Easter Egg Hunt. Funding for these events was cut in 2010 and remains unfunded by the city.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.

The Jury is still out. I liked the "Old Patch". J
