Mercer Island Firefighters Food Drive

MIFD firefighters raised nearly $1,000 in cash and a pickup truck full of food and sundries to restock the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Food Pantry.

Mercer Island Firefighters went "above the call of duty" and conducted a Thanksgiving food drive in recent weeks that helped stock the shelves of the Youth and Family Services (YFS) Food Pantry, according to a city press release.

Organized by Firefighter Thomas Guttu, the drive gathered enough food to fill the bed of the Department pickup truck. In addition, $875 was raised to provide hot meals for over 200 people this holiday season.

The donations went the YFS Food Pantry which has seen a dramatic increase in use by Islanders in recent years.

"It was a huge success and, needless to say, I'm very proud of these guys,"
said Fire Chief Chris Tubbs.
