More I-90 Nighttime Closures Planned this Week

Closures will shut down both westbound and eastbound lanes of I-90 this week.

Notice those new metal mountings on along the Mercer Island overpasses of Interstate 90? They're part of an ongoing electronic signage project by the State Department of Transportation.

According to the WSDOT, the Active Traffic Management Project is a five-year-old federally funded program worth $42 million intended to reduce congestion. Improvements to the I-90 Floating Bridge and State Route 520 were made last year and now it's Mercer Island's turn. WSDOT will close I-90 at various locations next week during the evenings.

The closures are as follows:

Monday, Feb. 21; Wednesday, Feb. 23 - the morning of Friday, Feb. 25:

  • Eastbound I-90 at the Mount Baker Tunnel will close for construction work. The first lane will close at 7 p.m., the second at 9 p.m. and the third at 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 4 a.m. Traffic will be re-routed into the express lanes.
  • The on-ramp from northbound I-5 to eastbound I-90 will close each night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. for construction work.
  • The on-ramps from both directions of Rainier Avenue S. to eastbound I-90 will close each night from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. for construction work.

  • Up to three lanes on westbound I-90 in various locations from 150th Avenue SE to Eighth Avenue S. may close nightly for construction work. The first lanes will close at 7 p.m. then 9 p.m. and finally the third lane will close at 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 22

  • Up to three lanes on eastbound I-90 in various locations from Eighth Avenue S. to 150th Avenue SE may close nightly for construction work. The first lanes will close at 7 p.m. then 9 p.m. and finally the third lane will close at 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
