Islanders enjoyed a pyrotechnic display of light and color Saturday night at Luther Burbank Park.

Thousands of spectators enjoyed a Summer Celebration fireworks show that very nearly wasn't on Saturday night at Luther Burbank Park.

The display, which started around 10:30 p.m. and lasted for about 20 minutes, was nearly cancelled after the city had cut funding for the show last year and sponsors were slow to come forward. In the end, the Mercer Island Community Fund — which led off the effort to raise the money needed for the show — was joined by local businesses , Mercer Island Medical Imaging, , and regional companies Puget Sound Energy and Overlake Hospital Medical Center.

The show, put on for years by Western International Fireworks, featured 389 rockets — some as large as 4-inches in diameter — launched from a barge in Lake Washington off Luther Burbank Park, approximately 600 feet off shore.
