Fun activities and some sweet deals for the whole family this upcoming week.

EVENTS FOR FAMILIES, June 1, 2011 – June 8, 2011

June 3: Gulliver’s Travels at

7 p.m.

The play follows Lemuel Gulliver on his journeys through strange and distant lands. Performed by the theater’s conservatory students.  Performances run through June 12th, every Friday night at 7 PM and Saturday and Sundays at 2 PM.

Cost: $15 adults, $13 youth and seniors. Order tickets online or by calling 206 232-4145, ext. 100, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or the box office, ext. 109, on weekends.

 June 3 & 4, 2011: Eastside Fill and Feed

Mercer Island families are invited to volunteer at this event sponsored by the non-profit organization Feed My Starving Children. Meals will be assembled both days in Redmond at the .  Volunteers will pack over 270,000 MannaPack meals, designed to be easy to digest for severely malnourished children.  They are also formulated to be culturally acceptable worldwide.  Get over information or register to volunteer online

June 4: Community Meeting at the to Plan the Early Learning Garden

10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Parents are invited to provide input on the creation of an outdoor gathering and learning space which will support the development of early literacy skills in children. The garden will be used for storytelling, dramatic play, music and dance.

June 4: Open Farm at Fox Hollow Farm and Equestrian Center 

10 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Fox Hallow is equestrian farm nestled between Squak and Tiger Mountains in Issaquah at 12031 Issaquah-Hobart Road SE.  Drop by today to visit with the farm’s animals, swing on the hayloft’s rope swings, play in bouncy houses, play in a creek and drive some kid size John Deere tractors and trucks.  You are invited to bring a picnic lunch and there will also be hot dogs, cotton candy, kettle corn and drinks for sale. 

Cost: $6 with children under age one free.

Schedule Alert - Indoor Drop in Play at the Gym at the CLOSED for the Season

Schedule alert if you were planning a play date at the indoor play space at the Mercer Island Community Center, indoor play is now closed for the season. The good news is later on this month the fun mobile will begin visiting Mercer Island parks and I’ll be updating you on that in future Play Date! columns.

Teens – Volunteer to be a Reading Buddy This Summer at the

Applications are now being accepted at the Mercer Island Library for the 2011 Reading Buddy Program.  The program runs Mondays, June 27 to August 8 (except 7/4) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Teens are asked to make a commitment to attend two sessions, plus a mandatory training on June 20th. 

Applications and two references are due Monday, June 13th at the Mercer Island Library. Applications are available at the library or online. Teens applying to the program must provide two references.  Adults providing a reference should fill out this form
