Islanders mark Lent with reflections on life's lacks, excesses, and lots of pancakes.

Christians all over the Island attended Lent services Wednesday night to mark the 40 days leading up to Easter. At Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, congregants gathered for a pancake dinner. Pancakes were traditionally a way to use up extra stores of rich foods like eggs, milk and butter prior to the 40-day fasting period.Β

Young church members also colored paper crosses with ash and tucked wishes written on pieces of paper into the church's own "Wailing Wall" constructed from paper bags.Β
