Viewfinder: Eastside Firefighters Pipes & Drums Band

The North Mercer Island Fire Station becomes the band's new rehearsal space.

Bagpiping and drumming firefighters filled 78th Ave. SE and with sound on Wednesday, practicing traditional Gaelic music that they perform at events like funerals, graduations, weddings and parades.

Formed in 2009, the Eastside chapter of this national group has some 30 members from around the area, about half of which are "kilted," meaning they must pass a performance and knowledge test. Firefighter Mark Givens is the band's only Island member.

They will be practicing on Mercer Island through the end of August — to the delight in particular of children — of preschoolers and the public is invited to come and listen between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Wednesdays.
