Viewfinder: Mercer Island Fine Arts Showcase

The annual fundraiser hopes to bring more artistic and visual literacy to Island children.

Now in its 32nd year, the Mercer Island Fine Arts Showcase and annual fundraiser is bringing together artwork by young Islanders, from kindergarten through high school, all under one roof at Mercer Island High School. Tuesday night featured hands-on activities like pottery throwing and splatter painting as well as musical performances by groups from all over the Mercer Island School District. Wednesday night the fun continued with more visual arts, music and dance.Β

This year, members of the Mercer Island Fine Arts Advisory Committee (FAAC), which organizes the event, are particularly giddy over the new Art Bus program, which they are exhibiting during the Showcase. The Art Bus, housed in a retrofitted school bus (the district's own Bus #17, which has been in service for nearly 20 years), will be a mobile art studio with workstations, sinks, a generator, LCD screens and Internet access that will service schools across the district.Β
