Evening Escape: December Lights

Lights abound during the holiday season. Check out the Hanukkah, Christmas and "seasonal" lights throughout the region!

Hanukkah, also called the Festival of Lights, is a joyous holiday for Jews which commemorates the rededication of the Temple after it was desecrated by the Greeks. This year, Hanukkah began on the evening of December 20 and lasts thru December 27. If you celebrate Hanukkah, or would like to observe the Hanukkah Lights, there are several beautiful displays in the area from which to choose.

In Seattle, you'll find menorah displays at the University Village, Seattle Center Center House and Northgate Mall.

On the Eastside, check out the lovely lights at Redmond Town Center, Crossroads Shopping Mall and .

On December 24, there is a special Hanukkah party with Chinese cuisine and a variety of activities at the Congregation Shaarei Tefillah Lubavich, in Seattle, starting at 7pm.

You'll find Christmas light displays in neighborhoods throughout the greater Seattle area, but here are three special displays you won't want to miss:

The Christmas Ships are coming to Mercer Island tonight! Don't miss this delightful Seattle tradition of floating lights on the water. A flotilla of bejeweled ships will cruise the north end of Seattle and stop at Luther Burbank Park from 7:50-8:10pm. Be sure to arrive early so you are able to secure a parking place for this popular event!

Candy Cane Lane is located on Northwest Park Road, off Ravenna Boulevard, in Seattle. This 23 house neighborhood reveals their holiday spirit with high-wattage light displays that have delighted generations of passersby. The display lasts thru January 1, from 4pm to midnight.

If you want a light display that will really dazzle you, get in the car and head north to The Lights of Christmas, located in Stanwood. In just an hour, by car, you'll be treated to one million sparkling lights, carolers, fresh hot donuts and holiday theatre. Plan to stay overnight if possible, as there are comfortable accommodations, for small and large families, nearby.
