Getaway—Far Away—from Seafair

Local alternatives to the sensory overload of Seafair.

Just to get this out of the way, I am a big fan of Seafair-some years more than others. However, each year, I hear dozens of complaints from people who would prefer to avoid Seafair altogether.

Here are a few local excursions to escape the noise:

Unfortunately, unless you can find a generous benefactor with a surplus of tickets, or you can talk someone into selling you their ticket, the Twin Peaks Film Festival-on Friday night, at the Seattle Art Museum-is sold out. However, the Seattle Asian Art Museum will be showing The Namesake, from 9:30-midnight, in the Amphitheater.

If music soothes your soul, check out Noah Gunderson's CD Release party at the Columbia City Theater, Saturday, August 6th, at 9pm. This local folk musician's latest release focuses on family and how it shapes us into who we become. For the opera buffs, McCaw Hall still has single seats available for Porgy and Bess for the August 6th performance, at 7:30 pm.

On Sunday, August 7th, the last of the thunderboats will race for their place in Seafair history. To avoid the traffic, you may wish to venture farther than just the city limits. Here are a couple of ideas:

You can venture east, to the Snoqualmie Falls Forest Theater and Family Park, delight in the fresh air, gorgeous natural setting and be inspired by the classic Broadway hit Brigadoon. For an additional fee, you can purchase a BBQ dinner to enjoy after the show. 

So, if skipping Seafair is a priority, you'll find many other local and nearly local options. Wherever you go, whatever you do, be safe and have fun!
