Great Escape: Coastal Getaways

A plethora of fun awaits you at the seaside.

Nothing evokes a summer memory like a vacation at the beach. And we're not just talking about our fine Lake Washington beaches here on Mercer Island, which are fine places to while away a lazy summer afternoon, like , , or . We're talking seaside beaches.

Whether walking along the beach-with the ocean tickling your feet-or creating the sandcastle of your son's or daughter's dreams, or exploring the wonders of the sea, there are countless ways to spend your days near the ocean.

The Washington Coast features everything from premier destination resorts to simple and rustic accommodations. Here are are five to spark your summer dreams:

1. Ocean Shores offers outstanding beachcombing, clamming, boating, fishing and other activities. If you are seeking family-friendly lodging, look no further than the newly remodeled Canterbury Inn. Amenities include: a heated pool, hot tub, exercise room, a barbecue area and they even have their own clam kitchen!

2. If nightlife and entertainment beckon, then the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino may be a better option for you and yours. You can partake in poker and other table games, listen to live music or enjoy fine dining during your stay.

3. Just a short drive away, you'll find the Hi-Tide Ocean Beach Resort-a quiet destination location in Moclips, Washinton. Bring Fido and watch the seagulls all day, read a book or go fly a kite. This is a place where you can really get away from it all!

4. If a quaint cottage along the sea appeals to you, check out The Shelburne Inn, in Seaview, Washington. Beautifully appointed rooms, a gourmet breakfast and an on-site pub are just a few of the reasons to make this a stop on your next coastal getaway.
