Great Escape: Dog-Friendly Day Trips

Dates with your four-legged friends...

Spring is just around the corner, and gardeners are gardening, cyclists are cycling, and our furry friends are just waiting to get off of the couch and out of the house! When neighborhood walks just won't do, consider doing something unusual for you and your favorite canine.

Have you ever thought about taking a class with your dog? At UCLA-which stands for University Canine Learning Academy-you and your dog can experience the joys of Puppy Preschool through Middle School. Or, if you simply want to play, you can enroll your four pawed friend in a class called Basic Tricks. UCLA is conveniently located, just behind University Village, in Seattle.

Perhaps you and your dog are seeking more competitive fun? If so, you might want to try agility training at the Seattle Agility Center, in Maple Valley. You will guide your dog through tunnels, around obstacles and over jumps for speed and accuracy. Regardless of you or your dog's athleticism, there is an opportunity for fun or competition for everyone!

Channel your dog's inner sheep herding instinct at Fido's Farm, in the Evergreen Valley, just outside of Olympia. You can rent sheep, ducks and cattle for your dogs to herd-starting at just $15 per day. Or, you can register your dog for a class or private lesson with one of the instructors.

Walk along the wild side at the off-leash area at Double Bluff Beach on Whidbey Island. Breathe in the fresh air, wiggle your toes in the sand, and let your hound do the same. While walking along the beach provides an extra boost in fitness, you and your dog will be able to indulge in the sights, smells and sounds of the waves and the wildlife.

Closer to home, you and your dog may enjoy socializing at the off-leash areas at Marymoor Park, in Redmond, or Luther Burbank Park, our local favorite. Wherever you go and whatever you do, enjoy the opportunity to spend some time with your four legged buddy!
