Great Escapes: Celebrate the Arts!

Countless local opportunities abound to enjoy the arts. Here's a brief list of plays, musicals, and cirque-from Issaquah to Seattle.

Indulge your inner drama queen-or king-and transport yourself into another world! You can do this in mere hours-on an evening or weekend-at one of the area's local theatres.

A short drive from Mercer Island, the performances at Issaquah's Village Theatre, rival those of other, big-city venues. Plus, you have the added benefit of free parking and quaint neighborhood eateries nearby. Now playing, thru April 24th, is the Iron Curtain; a two and a half hour, outrageously funny "Musical Commie-dy."

Another local gem for performing arts is the Kirkland Performance Center. This local gem offers everything from jazz, rock and country music, to acrobatic performances, and plays for adult and juvenile audiences-there truly is something for everyone. Upcoming performances include: Camelot, from April 9-12; Jazz for Japan on April 18 and Sleeping Beauty from April 23-May1.

When it comes to live theatre, is the pride of Mercer Island. With fresh performances by local talent, YTN's productions will be sure to entertain you. The final two productions of the season include: about growing up and classic hit Gulliver's Travels.

If you haven't experienced Teatro Zinzanni, you zimply must go! What can you expect from a Teatro Zinzanni experience? You might laugh hysterically or be utterly awestruck at the site of the contortionists-all while being served a delicious meal designed by chef Tom Douglas. Having attended three of their performances throughout the years, I have been truly amazed, thrilled, inspired, and sated-sensory overload has never been this much fun! Truly an over-the-top, unforgettable experience.

Featuring top national talent and the best live musical performances in the area, the 5th Avenue Theatre is truly our local performing arts' showpiece. Current and upcoming productions include: 9 to 5-a long-running Broadway hit and the classic musical, Guys and Dolls. So go ahead. Be an "escape artist" for an evening or take in a matinee on the weekend. Let yourself become "one" with the characters. You never know but you just might be a little more energized and prepared to tackle your own "real life" dramas.
