Great Escapes: The Spring Fling

It's spring, so get out and enjoy the longer days and (slightly) warmer temperatures!

While the winter months provided ample entertainment-heavy rain, storms, hail and snow-it was not terribly conducive to enjoying the outdoors. Now that the mercury is rising-albeit ever so slightly-we can get outside and enjoy our area's natural beauty.

If you have some flexibility in planning your work schedule, you might consider leaving the office, before rush hour, to meet your sweetheart for a post-work or midday hike. There are countless opportunities nearby for new and experienced hikers alike. If you just have time for a "quickie," check out Poo Poo Point, located in Issaquah. The abbreviated hike starts out on the Chirico Trail. The hike will take approximately two hours-assuming a consistent, brisk pace- and while there are no views to speak of on the way up the trail, you will be treated to breathtaking views at the top. If you have the better part of a day, and want a longer version of the hike, start at Issaquah High School for a nine mile odyssey.

Calling all animal lovers! Take your spouse, take your child, or take a friend to Northwest Trek. This is a must-see adventure for anyone who appreciates the animal kingdom. Take in the sights, sounds, and-yes-the smells of this 725 acre wildlife park, with over 200 animals, in their nearly-natural habitat. Northwest Trek is located just 55 miles south of Seattle, and is a perfect half-day or day trip.

Go fly a kite-at Gas Works Park! Imagine a slightly misty day accompanied by a little bit of wind behind your back, overlooking Lake Union and downtown Seattle. Add your favorite person, a kite, and a picnic basket with treats, and you have the makings of a delightfully uncomplicated and playful afternoon.

Walk, bike, run or skate around Greenlake. Take an hour out of your busy schedule and cruise around the 2.8 mile path, or partake in one of the various water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, swimming or fishing. If you'd like to extend your afternoon, the Woodland Park Zoo, newly resurfaced tennis courts, and a par 3 golf course are just minutes away.

If you've been cacooning all winter long, it's time to head outdoors. You'll enjoy countless benefits-fresh air, vitamin d, new sights and smells-and you can enjoy nearly all of the activities with your sweetheart, your child, a small or large group, or even by yourself. So go ahead, leave the office a little bit early. Call your friend or loved one and get out and play!
