Great Escapes: Yoga Retreats

Just say ohmmmm....

If you've never attended a yoga retreat, the mere idea of a retreat might intimidate you-like it did me-or it may just seem enigmatic. However, once you've participated in a yoga retreat, you are forever changed. Although I have been athletic for most of my life, flexibility is not my forte, and yoga, is-in its essence-a practice of flexibility in both mind and body.

Fortunately, for me, my first yoga retreat was in a beautiful setting and I shared the experience with one of my BFFs. Upon arrival, I felt as if I had been instantly transported into a decompression chamber. Located at The Yoga Lodge on Whidbey Island, on over five acres, the accommodations, the meals and the surroundings surpassed my every expectation. The only discomfort I felt was after one of the many hours of yoga practice, or when we first started our half day of meditation. Those practices stretched me-in mind, body and spirit. The Yoga Lodge offers yoga retreats, with various themes, throughout the year.

If you are looking for a unique yoga retreat, you might want to consider heading over to the Methow Valley, from May 13th-15th. The weekend retreat features renown instructor, Ray Holman, who has led retreats in the North Cascades, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico. Located at the Skalitude Retreat, you will be treated to silent mediation, hours and hours of yoga, a hike and a healing workshop. The word Skalitude is a Salish word which means "to be in harmony with Nature." The Skalitude lifestyle includes off-grid, solar powered electricity, a solar powered hot water system, healthful meals, and simple living.

If you prefer something closer to home, consider a day of yoga at .

Full disclosure: I love yoga retreats that combine yoga with other modalities. And that are more than an escape--they get me out of my daily grind while I'm there, and teach me tools that help me stay in the groove when I'm home. That's why I created Libre Retreats. Our May long weekend Vancouver, BC retreat is Spark: re-Ignite Your Creative Self, with 6 yoga classes + 6 workshops in performance art, creative writing, and artful expression. Everybody say ommmygoodness it's a spark-fest! http://libreretreats.com/retreats/spark/
