Mercer Island 'Day of Play' Party Sept. 21 at Mercerdale Park

Mercer Island's Parks and Recreation Department has announced a special "Let's Just Play" event at Mercerdale Park on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The City of Mercer Island is welcoming local children and parents to get outside and play in its parks in celebration of the "Worldwide Day of Play" on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department will host a "Let's Just Play" event at Mercerdale Park from 1-4 p.m. as a part of being a "Playful City, USA". Mercer Island has been recognized by non-profit KaBOOM! as a "Playful City, USA" for several years running, thanks to the city's commitment to creating and maintaining public play spaces for children.

Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play is an event designed to promote the importance of physical activity and unstructured playtime, away from the television or other passive forms of programmed entertainment.

Mayor Bruce Bassett declared Sept. 21 a "Day of Play" on Mercer Island at a July 1 City Council meeting.

"I urge all citizens to celebrate the 'Day of Play'," Bassett said, "and support efforts to bring awareness of play and the outdoor environment through play spaces and playgrounds in their communities and neighborhoods for the well‐being of this and future generations."

The Nickelodeon Channel will "go black" for several hours on Sept. 21st to encourage families to make time for play.

Visit Nickelodeon's website for more information and additional activities to encourage fun and play in your local neighborhood.
