Halloween on a Budget

The holidays are coming! Plan ahead so you won't have spooky bills in 2012!

Halloween is a little over three weeks away, and while some of you have already purchased your decorations, candy and costumes, others will be doing so very soon. Here are several ways to save and get you in a good financial mindset for the upcoming holiday season.

  • Have a budget or spending plan. Many people go shopping when they're tired, bored or trying to fill a void. You'll be less likely to splurge if you have a plan for your funds. If you don't have a spending plan, then start one today!
  • Purchase with a purpose! Of course it sounds obvious, but how many times have you gone shopping only to discover you needed something other than the item you purchased? Then, to compound the problem, you realize you bought a duplicate of an item you already own.
  • Try to shop when you aren't trying to fill a psychological need. When we've had a spat with a loved one, or feel as if we "deserve" something as much as another person, we might be more inclined to "treat" ourselves to some new shoes, or other fabulous item. Advertising and marketing campaigns don't help us stay disciplined either. They try to "trick" us into buying when we have the least amount of willpower. While a little bit of retail therapy--now and then--won't usually break your budget, it can wreak havoc on your bottom line if it becomes a habit.
  • Spend a little bit of time comparative shopping online, so you know what a good value really is. Then, wait a few days and see if you still want the item. You'll have gained some insight into whether or not you really wanted or needed the new costume, decoration or widget in the first place. If you decide that you really want it, then you'll know how much you're willing to pay for it.
  • Trade with your friends, family or neighbors. Last year's decorations or costume might not fit, or you just may not like it anymore. Consider swapping costumes or decorations with someone--or make a party out of it and invite your entire neighborhood.
  • Create your own costumes and decorations! Better yet, get the family involved in helping create your own spooktacular decorations. Alternatively, go to consignment stores, thrift shops and dollar stores to keep your costs down and your enjoyment level up.

You don't have to compromise your enjoyment as you manage your spending plan. On the contrary, you may find that you enjoy the things you purchase more because you have focused your energies on the things that really matter to you--not the new item on display or something that you really didn't want and need in the first place.
