Editor Kendall- Do Patch Readers wonder as I do- just how the Featured "HH" Home is selected each week- and by who?
x February 12, 2012 at 09:00 PM
Jerry- I think it may fall into the same category as Pet of the Week, Recipe of the Week, or Play of the Week. There is really no fair way to make the call other than judgement. Can you imagine trying to reach a group consensus? It's a feature rather than a contest, so I don't see it as a vying for some trophy. It maybe serve the public better by using some dongle like a slideshow to feature a dozen homes over just one. Just sayin', it's far more to do about nothing compared to other issues of interest.

Snoozingdog- It was a rhetorical question- knowing that Editor Kendall selects these- not an invitation to a group consensus. J-

Hey there Snoozingdog — actually this is a great question and I'm glad you chimed in. It's pretty simple, really. First I try to find 6 open houses on Mercer Island exclusively by looking at real estate website aggregators like Redfin, Estately and Zillow. They show most of the open houses for the coming week. Second, I always try to pick the highest and lowest asking price homes holding an open house. Third, in the spring and summer months, there's usually way more than 6 open houses each weekend, so then I just try to feature the most-recently listed home. It's pretty rare that more than 6 or 7 new listings show up in one week in the Mercer Island real estate market. That's pretty much how I compile them. Oh, one more thing that I do — I look through the Open House properties we're featuring and look for the home that answers the question: "Money no object, which home has the nicest look?" That's the one that I feature as the main photo to go with the article.

Hi Jerry — no worries, it was a really good question. I try to be pretty transparent about everything I do at Patch and your question gave me a good opportunity to do just that.

Looking forward to the Motor Oil of the Week! No group consensus or neked stuff pleez.
Kendall Watson February 12, 2012 at 11:07 PM
LOL. Something tells me local folks won't be too interested in that....

K & SD- I knew all along that Design Quality had nothing to do with House of the Week selection. J-

Jerry, we're relying on you to provide that! As I've often heard said, "They sure don't build 'em like they used to."
Ray Burt February 13, 2012 at 12:42 AM
Would be a huge improvement if you listed recent sales as well.
Kendall Watson February 13, 2012 at 12:49 AM
In a separate article? That's an interesting idea...
Ray Burt February 13, 2012 at 01:03 AM
Yes...open houses are good.....actual sales would be good too (and if you kept a tally, it could be really cool....since http://seattle.blockshopper.com/cities/mercer_island seems so hard to navigate and out of date....

K- As to your "Jerry, we're relying on you to provide that!" (design comments)- I really hang back re how I feel about many of the "HH"s you show- not wanting to jeopardize any sales of these existing homes. I'm all too often saddened by what I see offered. J-
