Reminder: Rep. Adam Smith to Address MI Chamber Luncheon at Noon

Tacoma Democrat Adam Smith is running for re-election in the newly drawn 9th Congressional District, which now includes Mercer Island and Bellevue after redistricting.

The public is invited to hear U.S. 9th District Congressman Adam Smith (D-Tacoma) address the at their monthly noon luncheon on May 3 at the .

Rep. Smith is seeking a ninth-term in office by representing essentially a new congressional district, redrawn earlier this year by the State Redistricting Commission. The new 9th U.S. District now stretches from Tacoma to Kirkland and includes Mercer Island and Bellevue. He is the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee where he is a strong advocate for our military personnel and their families. He has also served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.  

Audience members are encouraged to bring questions and join members of the Chamber as they get to know the Congressman.

"He is anxious to meet Mercer Island residents and business people," said Chamber Executive Director Terry Moremon in a Chamber press release.

Mercer Island is currently represented in Congress by as part of the 8th Congressional District, but for the November 2012 General Election. The new districts were formally adopted by the State Legislature on Feb. 1, and Mercer Island's transition to the 9th District will be complete when the 113th U.S. Congress is sworn in on Jan. 3, 2013. 

Smith's only declared challenger in the congressional race is Parkland Republican Jim Postma. Seattle City Councilman Bruce Harrell, a Democrat, has also indicated he is interested in the seat but hasn't officially announced his intention to enter the race. The filing deadline for the ballot is May 18, 2012.

Residents interested in attending the May 3 luncheon, noon-1:30 p.m., must RSVP by email at info@mercerislandchamberofcommerce.org or by calling 206-232-3404 for limited event seating. Admission is $15 for Chamber members or $20 for non-members.

The deadline for reservations is Tuesday, May 1 at noon.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
