Vote for Mercer Island Farmers Market in National Contest

Fans of the Mercer Island Farmers Market markets can give their favorite market some regional and national recognition in a contest sponsored by American Farmland Trust.

The Mercer Island Farmers Market can get some regional and national love, as the American Farmland Trust runs its fourth annual America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest.

Customers can vote for their favorite farmers market in this contest, which aims to promote the role that farmers markets play in keeping family farmers on the land, according to the contest website. Voting ends Sept. 3.

As part of the contest, a $1,000 Farmers Market Inspiration Award, sponsored by the Farmers Market Coalition, will be presented to a farmer showing the greatest dedication to his/her market, according to the website.

American Farmland Trust advocates for protection of farmland, promotion of sound farming practices and keeping farmers on the land.

Fans of the Mercer Island market or another market -- say one of these in Bellevue -- need not choose between them: People may vote for more than one market (though they may only vote once for each market), according to the contest website.

Go to www.votemyfarmersmarket.org to vote.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
