Island Crust Cafe Named 2012 Business of the Year

Island Crust Cafe's commitment to "giving back to the community" earned the business Mercer Island's top business accolade.

The Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce named Island Crust Cafe as the 2012 "Business of the Year" at its Jan. 10 award luncheon at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Chamber board member Emmet Maloof recognized Island Crust owners Richard and Kim Benjamin for their work and involvement in the community, citing the restaurant's recent commitment to donating $5,000 toward the cost of catering Feburary's Giving from the Heart Breakfast at Mercer Island High School. The breakfast is one of the community's largest annual fundraisers for the Youth and Family Services Foundation. The restaurant also provided food and drink for visitors to Mercerdale Park during this past summer's Mostly Music in the Park concerts.

"We're honored to live here and be a part of this community," Richard Benjamin said. "We're just grateful for the opportunity to contribute."

Located in the Island Corporate Center just outside of Town Center, Island Crust Cafe is well known for its vegetarian fare and certified kosher pizzas, but also offers fresh and homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, and a full menu of entrees and desserts. Maloof also mentioned the restarant offers free space for non-profit Mercer Island organizations.

"Island Crust Cafe is an outstanding example of businesses on Mercer Island," said Maloof. "They are building a better Island community by being here."

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
