Fog Lifting in Puget Sound on Wednesday, Say Forecasters

After a solid week of fog and stagnant air, the rain is forecast to return on Wednesday and stay with us for the rest of the week.

Weather forecasters say the fog that's been with us for a week will stay one more day on Tuesday before giving way to a weather front bringing rain and warmer temperatures.

Since Wednesday last week, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Dense Fog advisories daily and maintained an Air Stagnation warning due to a ridge of high pressure that stayed over Western Washington, trapping the cold and damp air over the Seattle area. According to Scott Sistek at KomoNews.com, the 7-day streak ties for the fifth longest all time (although well behind the "epic fog storm" of December 1985 when the city had 13 straight days with dense fog at some point).

The fog is already starting to break up over Mercer Island on Tuesday afternoon, but the weather will really start to shift tomorrow morning as the fog dissipates and a light breeze and rain start rolling into the area around 4 a.m., according to the NWS 7-day forecast.

Here's the latest forecast for Mercer Island for the rest of the week:

  • This Afternoon: Patchy fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 40. Calm wind.
  • Tonight: Rain likely after 4am. Patchy fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 35. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
  • Wednesday: Showers. High near 44. Light and variable wind becoming south southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
  • Wednesday Night: Showers likely, mainly before 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 38. South southwest wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
  • Thursday: A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. South wind 7 to 10 mph.
  • Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
