Holiday Tree Recycling Options

Mercer Islanders have a few options for recycling their holiday trees this year.

The following information is from the City of Mercer Island:

Holiday Tree Chipping

The City of Mercer Island will offer its annual holiday tree chipping service from Monday, December 26 - Monday, January 9. Bring your undecorated holiday tree to the City’s Maintenance Shop at 9601 SE 36th Street during daylight hours. City staff will repurpose the tree for use in City parks, trails and open spaces.

No flocked or artificial trees. When dropping off your holiday tree for chipping:

  • Remove tree stands
  • Remove all ornaments and lights
  • Deliver your tree only during daylight hours
  • Remember: no flocked or artificial trees accepted

For more information about holiday tree chipping, contact the City’s Maintenance Department at 206-275-7608.

Christmas Tree Collection

Yard debris customers can set holiday trees out on their regularly scheduled collection day.

Trees must be free of flocking, tinsel, ornaments and metal hangers, cut to 4-foot lengths and tied into bundles less than 2 feet by 3 feet wide. Use biodegradable string or twine. Do not use nylon, plastic or other synthetic materials to bundle your tree.

Flocked trees are not recyclable and will not be accepted. Put flocked trees in the garbage.

Garbage, Recycling, and Yard Waste Holiday Collection Service

Because both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Sunday, there will be no changes to residential collection services. Allied Waste drivers will collect on their normal routes and schedules.
