I-90 Construction Workers to be Honored for Life-Saving Heroics

Gary Merlino Construction workers Kirk Whalen and Glen Palacios performed life-saving CPR on a motorist involved in a Mercer Island I-90 crash in May after he had a heart attack.

The  announced it will publically recognize two road construction workers at a Sept. 19 at for saving the life of a motorist last May after he crashed his car on the Mercer Island segment of I-90. 

Gary Merlino Construction crewmen Kirk Whalen and Glen Palacios were working on a storm drain in the freeway median on the morning of May 5 and saw a green Toyota Corolla in the eastbound lanes hit a Jersey barrier on Mercer Island near the East Mercer Way off-ramp. They found the driver unconscious and immediately pulled him from the car.

They noticed the man had no pulse, cleared his airway, and started chest compressions. Both were trained and certified in CPR.

The men are part of a construction crew working on the I-90 Two-Way Transit and HOV Operations Project, scheduled to be complete in 2014.
