MIYFS Holiday Program Seeking Sponsors

Mercer Island Youth and Family Services is seeking donation sponsors to match with local families currently receiving public assistance.

The City of Mercer Island Youth and Family Service Department (YFS) is recruiting sponsors for its annual holiday assistance program that provides gift cards to Island children and families in need.

Sponsors are confidentially matched with a qualified Island family and asked to provide one gift card per child to help brighten the holiday season.

"The need for family support on the Island remains high as many families continue to struggle with the fallout from the economic downturn," says YFS Family Assistance Coordinator, Cheryl Manriquez.

YFS focuses exclusively on providing services to the Mercer Island community and touches the lives of all Islanders through counselors in the schools, senior services, affordable family counseling, family assistance, the Food Pantry, and a thriving thrift shop.

Those interested in becoming a holiday sponsor can contact Manriquez at 206.275.7869 or cheryl.manriquez@mercergov.org. Donations accepted until November 27, 2012.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
