New Year's Holiday: What's Open, What's Closed

Jan. 1 happens to fall on a Sunday, so the holiday is observed on Monday, Jan. 2. What's open, what's closed for this week?

Happy New Year! Jan. 1 falls on a Sunday this year, and the federal holiday is being observed on Monday. Here's what you need to know to get around on Monday.

If you are traveling on this weekend, check out the Washington State Department of Transportation web pages to plan your route. Be sure to check traffic and weather conditions along Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass, US 2 at Stevens Pass, Interstate 5 near the U.S./Canadian border and I-5 between Olympia and Tacoma.

Here is a list of what’s open and what's closed:

is closed Monday. It will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 3.

is on winter break and will return Jan. 3.

King County government: Closed Monday.

US Postal Service: Closed Monday.

King County Metro transit: King County Metro Transit will have Sunday service on Sunday and Monday

Sound TransitOn Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2, Link light rail, Tacoma Link, and ST Express buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. There will be no Sounder service on New Year's Day and Monday, and Sound Transit offices will be closed on Jan. 2.

State of Washington: Closed Monday.

State liquor stores: All state-run liquor stores will be closed on New Year's Day and most will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The is located at 2459 76th Ave SE.

Washington State Ferries: The Washington State Ferries switch to its winter schedule on Jan. 1.

Federal government: Closed Monday.

Garbage and Recycling: Garbage and recycling will be on its regular schedule on Mercer Island.
