State Route 520 to Close Overnight Tonight; Full Closure Next Weekend

State Route 520 was to be closed tonight, Sept. 13 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. A full closure is scheduled for next weekend, Sept. 21-24.

The State Route 520 Bridge will close overnight for construction related to the SR 520 Eastside project.

Crews will close both directions of SR 520 from Montlake Boulevard in Seattle to I-405 in Bellevue, from 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, to complete utility work across all highway lanes.

The Washington State Department of Transportation sent the following information about the closure:

During the closure, crews will remove overhead power and cable lines just west of the Bellevue Way overpass. The lines are being relocated to create space for cranes and other tall equipment that will be used to build the future westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Bellevue Way.

“We’re moving these lines to prevent workers and equipment from running into them during construction activities and to make sure power and cable service is uninterrupted while we widen SR520,” said Brian Dobbins, construction manager for the Washington State Department of Transportation’s SR 520 Eastside Transit and HOV Project. “We need to close the road to move the necessary removal equipment into place and get those lines out of the way.”

SR 520 floating bridge maintenance crews will also take advantage of the closure to conduct inspection and repair work.

Two sections of SR 520 will remain open to traffic during the overnight closure: I-5 to Montlake Boulevard and areas east of I-405.

Overnight drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes during the closure. The work is part of the SR 520 Eastside project. Closing all lanes overnight allows crews to safely complete the time-sensitive work without interfering with daytime traffic.

Disruptions to cross-lake traffic patterns inevitably affect Interstate 90 and Mercer Island commuters.

Another weekend closure is coming up next weekend, from 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, and last until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, WSDOT reported.

I'll be a bit more direct than Jerry. The new site is a mess. Visually it's extremely cluttered.Read More It's slow, very slow. There appear to be no RSS feeds, a major negative. Following a few links sometimes sends you to a different community's Patch site. And what happened with the editing staff. Unless I missed something, suddenly there are new editors without any warning. No matter what the circumstances, normally such a move would be accompanied by an announcement of some sort. Venice may be the greatest editor ever, but it looks like she is splitting her time among several Patch sites, so the odds are stacked against her. Her "latest activities" list even suggests that she is editing a Patch site down in the San Francisco Bay area. With all due respect, Patch sites should be hyper-local, and the best route to that is a local (i.e. Mercer Islander) editor.
