VFW Seeks Support for 'Patriots Plaza'

Mercer Island VFW Post 5760 announced plans this week to build a commemorative plaza near the clubhouse entrance and is seeking support from the community to build it.

Dubbed "Operation Patriots Plaza", VFW post commander Frank Sorba told Mercer Island Patch that the plaza was part of a larger fundraising effort to improve the Keewadin Clubhouse's landscaping after a major refurbishment of the building itself was completed last year. The centerpiece of the improvements would feature two large commemorative stones, a stand of four flags and a brick-paved plaza.

A granite stone at the pedestal of the flags will be engraved with the names of residents who gave their lives for their country, and a second stone will welcome visitors to the Keewaydin Clubhouse with a reminder that "Freedom is never free".

The plaza will be paved with bricks offered for a donation of $150, each with messages recognizing a military member's service or donors name.

Sorba said that more information would be available and donations could be made starting at the VFW's Summer Celebration booth.
