The Islander's Boys Tennis team racked up 22 points to secure the state championship for the 19th time

Girls Tennis Island War -- On the other side of the state from the boys Lacrosse State Final, Girls Tennis was having an Island War of its own, final score 20-19.

SCHOOLS||Monday, May 30 New head coach Mindy Blakeslee, leading the lady Islanders to their 35th State Title, said "I am so proud of our girls. Winning this title was truly a team effort.

Mercer Island Veterans from WWII to Iraq handed out Buddy Poppies on Memorial Day weekend and talked about what the day means to them.

GOVERNMENT||Monday, May 30 On May 28, Mercer Island Veterans of Foreign Wars from VFW Post 5760 honored the fallen heroes from all branches of the military by handing out “Buddy Poppies”

Tuesday, May 31:

If you know a senior citizen on Mercer Island who is making a difference, consider nominating them for the Flash Family Inspirational Award.

VOLUNTEERS IN THE NEWS||Tuesday, May 31 Attention all seniors active in the Mercer Island community. Thanks to long-time Island resident Phil Flash, there's now an award for seniors who volunteer on Mercer Island.

Six Mercer Island women will play in the Seattle Womens Golf Association City Tournament on June 13-17 at Sahalee Country Club

SPORTS||Tuesday, May 31 On June 13 – 17, Sahalee Country Club will host the 2011 Seattle Women’s Golf Association (SWGA) City Championship.

Wednesday, June 1:

A 14-year-old Islander Middle School boy who took his older sisters unused pain medication to school in April and handed it out to friends could be charged with drug possession and distribution

SCHOOLS||Wednesday, June 1 A 14-year-old Mercer Island middle school student arrested in April could face drug possession and distribution charges for bringing the prescription drug Oxycodone to , according to Ian Goodhew, spokesman for the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. "The youth will be formally charged next week, but his case could be diverted, if he has no criminal history, to the Community Accountability Board, which imposes punishments like community service for first time juvenile offenders."

New and more detailed data released May 18 by the US Census Bureau reveal more details about how Mercer Island has changed in the past decade.

NEWS||Wednesday, June 1 Islanders are older, more racially diverse and live in slightly smaller households with fewer children, according to some of the latest data released by the US Census Bureau.

Thursday, June 2:

Mercer Island Mayor Jim Pearman suffered a massive heart attack Tuesday but is now home resting.

GOVERNMENT||2 days ago Mercer Island Mayor Jim Pearman returned home Thursday, two days after suffering a massive heart attack. Pearman's attack happened when a piece of plaque came loose and plugged his left anterior descending, or LAD, artery, causing his heart to starve for oxygen for 20 minutes.

Mercer Island's "Don't Panic Dads!" team came in 100th out of 500 teams in the 100th running of the Ski to Sea Relay Race

SPORTS||2 days ago

From the foot of Mount Baker to the shores of Bellingham Bay, eight Mercer Island dads ran, kayaked, went skiing, bicycling and canoeing with 500 other teams for 100 miles, to reach 15th place (100th overall) in the Open Recreation division of this 100-year-old race.

Friday, June 3:

MI’s Summer Celebration goes retro, offering boat rides on a 1921 steamship.

NEWS||Yesterday Mercer Island’s much-anticipated Summer Celebration event just got a bit more celebratory. A new addition to the program this year: boat rides on an historic steam engine passenger ship. The Virginia V Steamship, built in 1921, is one of just two operating steam-powered, wooden hull ships remaining in the country.

Parents surveyed support switch from Mondays to Wednesdays for all district schools.

SCHOOLS||Yesterday Parents largely support the shift of the school district’s early release day from Mondays to Wednesdays, according to preliminary results of a recent parent survey.
