Teen Actors Present Four New Plays in 2013 YETI Summer Readings

Youth Experimental Theatre Institute (YETI) will be presenting staged readings of short plays written and performed by Mercer Island and Eastside high school students on July 26 and 27 at 7 p.m. and July 28 at 2 p.m.  The performances are free and open to the public and will be held at Mercerdale Park.

The plays to be performed will be “Checks and Pennies” by Enzo Gattucio; “Horizon’s Wake“  by Coleman Taylor-Manning; "Babel" by Kyle Marshall; and “My Favorite Chair “ by Andre Bourlin.  Plays are appropriate for audience members ages 13 and up. Don't forget to bring your picnic supplies and chairs for a fun evening in the park.

Staged readings are performances of new plays which generally do not feature full costumes, sets and other production elements. The process of having a play “workshopped” gives playwrights valuable insight into the strengths and areas for improvement of a script in development.  Attending a staged reading provides audience members with a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of theatre.

YETI was founded by Mercer Island High School alumnus Akiva Krauthamer in 2011 to provide opportunities for teen actors, directors and playwrights to develop their skills.  The first series of YETI Summer Readings was held in 2012 and was produced by Krauthamer, who is now studying theatre design and production at Carnegie Mellon University.  Carson Beck, a June 2013 graduate of MIHS, is directing this year’s program.
