Rand Ginn Selected for 2013 Flash Family Inspirational Award

The Flash award is given annually to recognize a local senior citizen who has led or served the community as a role model.

Rand Ginn is the 2013 recipient of The Flash Family Inspirational Award.

The award honors a Mercer Island senior adult who exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship or community leadership, and possesses an optimistic attitude and friendly demeanor while acting as a role model to others.
The award, started in 2008, was named in honor of Phil Flash, a long time Mercer Island resident and artist.

According to a city press release, Rand Ginn is receiving the award for the exemplary service and positive attitude he brings to the Mercer Island community.

Throughout his 35 years as an Island resident, Mr. Ginn has worked on campaigns, levies, the Historical Society, the School Board and a host of other community boards.

"Mr. Ginn has a quiet, gentle, reliable, ‘can do’, professional and straightforward demeanor that enhances his effectiveness with groups and organizations. He is selfless in using his business and financial expertise to serve the community." the press release stated.

“Community work makes you feel real good,” Mr. Ginn is quoted as saying in a 2008 newspaper article.  In addition to his local work, Mr. Ginn jumps-in when other important community causes or needs come to his attention.

For example, he worked with the Ten Thousand Villages sale of international goods at fair market prices for third-world artisans, helped to bring the African Children’s Choir to MI, contributed to Habitat for Humanity efforts and could even be found sorting food donations at First Harvest.

Mr. Ginn also extends his community giving to international causes with the Mercer Island Rotary.

"In all aspects of his life, Mr. Ginn embodies the spirit of service to community.
Please join the Youth and Family Services Department in thanking Mr. Ginn for his many contributions," said Youth and Family Services Department Director Cindy Goodwin.

Ginn's name will be added to the Flash Family Inspirational Award Trophy plaque, located at the Mercer Island Community and Events Center.

(Ed. Note: An earlier version of this post misstated the origins of the Flash award, which was created by the Flash family. Mercer Island Patch regrets the error.)
