Downtown Commuters Get Incentive for Taking Transit, Biking or Walking

Starting today, downtown residents and workers can earn gift cards and be entered for monthly drawings by taking a bus, vanpool or a bike, or walking to work.

Drive your car to work in downtown Bellevue? Civic leaders there and in King County are giving commuters an extra push to try something other than your car to get to and from the Eastside's downtown hub.

City of Bellevue, King County Metro and TransManage has launched Downtown Bellevue on the Move, which offers rewards and travel assistance to downtown residents and workers who try a commute mode other than driving alone.

According to a city of Bellevue press release, Bellevue’s long-range goal is to increase the use of alternative commutes downtown from the current 35 percent of all commute trips to 40 percent.

According to the website, participants must live or work within the following boundaries: between Main Street and NE 12th Street, and 100th and 114th avenues Northeast.

Residents can plan their trips via bus, carpooling, walking and biking on the city's alternative transportation site, www.ChooseYourWayBellevue.org.

The program replaces the Downtown Bellevue Commute Club and participants in that project will be automatically transferred to the new program, according to the city.

According to the press release, incentives for riding the bus, carpooling, vanpooling, biking or walking to work, include:

  • A $50 Get Started gift card: Eligible participants who live or work in Bellevue can earn a $50 gift card after 25 days (round trips) of logging a commute by bus, carpool, vanpool, bike or walking to work – anything but driving alone.
  • Monthly drawings for a $50 gift card: Continue to log your commute trips and you’ll be entered into a monthly drawing for two $50 gift cards. All you have to do is log 12 days (round trips) of using a green commute mode.
  • How to sign up: Interested commuters can sign up at www.DBOnTheMove.org and receive information about other promotional incentives through King County Metro and Wheel Options. The website also includes travel resources such as vanpool and carpool partner matching, a transit trip planner and commute cost calculator.
