Downtown Commuters Get Incentive for Taking Transit, Biking or Walking

Starting today, downtown residents and workers can earn gift cards and be entered for monthly drawings by taking a bus, vanpool or a bike, or walking to work.

Drive your car to work in downtown Bellevue? Civic leaders there and in King County are giving commuters an extra push to try something other than your car to get to and from the Eastside's downtown hub.

City of Bellevue, King County Metro and TransManage has launched Downtown Bellevue on the Move, which offers rewards and travel assistance to downtown residents and workers who try a commute mode other than driving alone.

According to a city of Bellevue press release, Bellevue’s long-range goal is to increase the use of alternative commutes downtown from the current 35 percent of all commute trips to 40 percent.

According to the website, participants must live or work within the following boundaries: between Main Street and NE 12th Street, and 100th and 114th avenues Northeast.

Residents can plan their trips via bus, carpooling, walking and biking on the city's alternative transportation site, www.ChooseYourWayBellevue.org.

The program replaces the Downtown Bellevue Commute Club and participants in that project will be automatically transferred to the new program, according to the city.

According to the press release, incentives for riding the bus, carpooling, vanpooling, biking or walking to work, include:

  • A $50 Get Started gift card: Eligible participants who live or work in Bellevue can earn a $50 gift card after 25 days (round trips) of logging a commute by bus, carpool, vanpool, bike or walking to work – anything but driving alone.
  • Monthly drawings for a $50 gift card: Continue to log your commute trips and you’ll be entered into a monthly drawing for two $50 gift cards. All you have to do is log 12 days (round trips) of using a green commute mode.
  • How to sign up: Interested commuters can sign up at www.DBOnTheMove.org and receive information about other promotional incentives through King County Metro and Wheel Options. The website also includes travel resources such as vanpool and carpool partner matching, a transit trip planner and commute cost calculator.

Pretty big announcement: http://patch.com/N-dKc8

I don't think announcements are intended for that use, Ray. Perhaps you'd consider writing a blog post or letter to the editor instead?

Post removed/revoked: My not so subtle attempt at humor to re-address the critical Jerry Posts Too Much problem was removed for violating Patch Standards. Oh well...again great news for Jerry as he doesn't have to pay for a personal blog yet gets a large following on AOL's dime.

@Ray, as I mentioned before, I'm trying to work with Jerry to tone it down. It's unfortunate that I needed to step in here and moderate this but hopefully everyone will get the message that Patch's Terms of Use do not permit self-promotion, nor do they permit personal attacks. Thanks for supporting Mercer Island Patch. Kind Regards, Kendall Watson, Mercer Island Patch Editor

Kendall, No worries. I am done with Patch. I will delete my account (if that's possible) right after this post. I, for one, have loved the local content, approach and informational real-time service Patch as afforded citizens here. But the frustration I feel is too much.....so instead of putting up comments (by the way, mine is hardly a personal attack) to try and persuade abusers of the system from continually abusing, I'll go my merry way and bid adieu. Too bad...for the good parts are very, very good. I do hope for future readers that you are able to address this issue -- it's sad that one bad apple can spoil the bunch (had to leave on a Washington State metaphor). Bye Patch and let folks who loathe me rejoice.

I hope you will consider starting a blog or writing a letter to express your opinions, Ray. Adding to the fray with your previous announcement post is not the best way, in my opinion, with the other avenues available to you on Patch.

Kendall, I don't see a "delete account" button. Please delete my account. Ray

JERRY STOP THE POSTS!! Please can an editor address this before Jerry drives us all away?
Kendall Watson July 07, 2012 at 07:01 PM
Ray, I'm sorry to lose ya. Just head over to your "account" on the top right to unsubscribe to Patch. Kind Regards, Kendall

Being addressed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

. As far as my Posts go, they are discussions of what I consider important Island issues. J- (They are not intended as "Self Promotion").

This is a cool program. I participated in the beta test and received an REI gift card. The stats are pretty amazing for how many Bellevue-bound commuters are using alternative modes of commute (I'm not implying it's cause and effect).
