A NOOK Book I'm reading with increasing dismay-

The Lost Bank: The Story of Washington Mutual-The Biggest Bank Failure in American History by Wall Street Journal Reporter Kirsten Grind.

For many years, I was happy to recommend Washington Mutual as a source of much of the financing for the many custom family homes I designed on Mercer Island and elsewhere. As a school child in my native Seattle, I learned habits of thrift (as did so many of my classmates) by participating in WM's Passbook Savings Program weekly.

This well-researched and written book details how this fine institution was ruined by financial freebooters including well-known respected locals as well as many imports.

. This well-researched and written book details how Washington Mutual was ruined by financial freebooters including well-known previously respected locals as well as many other opportunists. Here's DealBook on Kerry Killinger's response in today's New York Times. As for me. I'm inclined to believe the book. http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/washington-mutuals-former-chief-takes-issue-with-books-portrayal/

. As the Feds close in, I'm having a hard time finishing this so tragic story of a once fine Financial institution sinking into a sea of greed- as the book cover shows. Jerry-

Kirsten Grind, an excellent former reporter for the Puget Sound Business Journal, wrote this book and I would always be on the lookout for her stories on WaMu and their demise. She's now at the Wall Street Journal (sadly for us, I suppose).
