Fall on Mercer Island

Slow down and enjoy the leaves at these five spots on Mercer Island before they're gone — I've shared some photos from our garden of our autumn delights — best time of the year!

We've spent a good many of our recent years living here on Mercer Island, happily renovating our very well-designed Mid-Century Modern home — designed by Hawley Dudley Architect, AIA.

The home was built back in 1955 and has been occupied by eight subsequent owners — some more competent and/or caring gardeners than the others.

Its neglected large garden on the rest of the half acre lot had to be redone — a very large concurrent project.

Take a look by clicking on the photos above at what we've done with our garden since then, taken a few days ago before we start losing all the leaves. I took the featured picture and Patty took all the others of the garden she created that bursts with color in the fall — it's the best time of the year!

Mercer Island is full of deciduous trees that turn bright colors in fall. My favorite is driving up Island Crest Way from the to the . Very colorful, indeed.

Here's four other favorite local spots for enjoying the autumn leaves:

  1. ;
  2. ;
  3. North-end of Merrimont Drive;
  4. and finally, — all are worth a good look!

Here's a related JG "PatchPost" that tells more about the desirability of downsizing when/if the time comes. http://mercerisland.patch.com/blog_posts/remodeling-an-existing-mercer-island-home-makes-a-lot-of-sense-these-days-3

Patty should get full credit for the garden and the pictures of same. She's the GardenChair and I'm the HouseChair- responsible for maintenance, updating and/or repairs. J- More on maintenance, updating and/or repairs- this is something that every homeowner has to face up to. And every architect designing custom homes has to consider- will the home you design be maintained- or neglected?

What a gorgeous garden you have Jerry. Hats off to Patty. Here is hoping paths cross someday. My first "job" after college was with a Menlo Park architectural firm. My father was a designer, built five of the homes I would live in. Architecture and Tree Love is in my blood. I will be checking out your favorite spots...Thanks for the tips!

Deborah- The GroppGarden is entirely Patty's with only a little inexpert help from me. (I'm just the house maintainer/redoer). We know Menlo Park well having had sonMike and his wife Gale live there for a number of years between various overseas assignments. We're looking forward to more of your "provocative" PatchPosts.
