I'm certainly not alone in disliking Windows 8. (See the various NYT, Seattle Times, Economist Articles below).

When travelling I now take just my "NOOK HD" tablet instead of my laptop..

I've too often gone a bit too far in updating my computer- afterward wishing I'd left well enough alone. Has anyone else done the same? Windows 8 makes me hesitate. JG- http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/14/technology/at-microsoft-sinofsky-seen-as-smart-but-abrasive.html?hpw

W8 is still something I can't relate to- it's totally non-intuitive. Just took back a very nice W8 Samsung to our Best Buy. Then ordered (online- the only way) a new Dell Laptop with W7. JG-

I have just recently purchased a Windows 8 machine. I was puzzled at the very first, but then I got some help with it and am now getting familiar with it. I'm still not in love with it as of yet, but I don't feel inclined to return it, either. I think I will just plod along with it. I had some software that gave me back to old interface that I am so accustomed to working with, but I don't find myself using it much. I guess this old dog sometimes likes to learn new tricks.

Mangit over at Office Depot has just about convinced me to give Windows 8 another try. I'll probably buy the HP LapTop she has on sale- it's a beauty. Now if I can wean myself away from W7. J-

Mangit over at Office Depot fixed my DELL W7 LapTop so I've been able to stave off buying a W8 machine for a while longer. JG-

Didn't take this old dog long to learn Windows 8. Now to master IE 10. I got used to Firefox.
Jerry Gropp Architect AIA August 08, 2013 at 02:45 PM
SWO- AOL just sent me a Firefox download- so I'll have to try that. Windows 8 is in my future- the new Lenovo W8 laptop is pretty snarfy (a lovely design appealing to a retired architect). JG-

My wife needed another computer so I got her a new Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. She took the Staples introduction to W8 and can manipulate it well (unless she has a glass of wine or three before she begins). I like some aspects of the interface but have reservations about how it does not work well with AutoCAD nor QuickBooks. They crash all the time & you have to save things every 15 minutes (like with the older versions of Autodesk products). The more things change, the more they stay the same...
Jerry Gropp Architect AIA August 08, 2013 at 07:08 PM
It's hard to buy a new laptop with Windows 7 these days but it can be done online from DELL and others. If I ever have to go W8, I promised my wife I'd take lessons from Microsoft or ?. JG-

Steve Ballmer is the correct spelling. Here's the NYT story- http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/24/technology/ballmer-announces-retirement-from-microsoft.html?src=me
Jerry Gropp Architect AIA August 24, 2013 at 07:14 PM
So interesting to see the Ballmer story play out. Who will be his successor and what will happen to the non-intuitive Windows 8? JG-
William Crane August 25, 2013 at 11:49 AM
Could it be that Windows 8 will be replaced with an [hopefully] improved & intuitive Windows 9?
Jerry Gropp Architect AIA August 25, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Or simply go back to already intuitive W7 that works so well. JG-
