Air Force Pilot From Mercer Island Summits Everest

A pilot from Mercer Island was one of four active-duty Air Force servicemen to reach the summit of Mount Everest on Monday, The Seattle Times reports.

Maj. Robert Marshall, who has completed several tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, tackled the mountain as part of the USAF Seven Summit Challenge—a program that encourages Air Force members to climb each continent's highest peak while raising money for military charities.

Marshall, 34, co-founded the group in 2005, The Times reported.

He has successfully reached five of the other peaks but was forced to turn back from Mount McKinley for a deployment.
