Something for Everyone: Mercer Island Home Search

After looking at two VERY different houses on today’s real estate tour of Mercer Island got me thinking about floor plans. Both houses were not too far apart in price, but one had only two bedrooms, a smaller backyard, and a four-car garage with a loft above. The rooms were smaller in general, and the kitchen and eating space seemed meant for just a few people.

The other was a four-bedroom with a great room, a kitchen with high-end appliances, a playroom area between two of the smaller bedrooms, and a big backyard with a play structure.

Guess which one appealed more to this mom? Of course, I was drooling over #2.

However, for a car nut without kids, the first house would be ideal. After all, when your cars are your babies, you want them to be as pampered as possible, right? Plenty of space, epoxy-coated floors, maybe even a lift. I’ve seen a few homes with lifts here on Mercer Island, too.

It all just depends on your personal wants, needs, and where you’re at in your life. Buyers, when you’re out looking for your next home, consider how you will actually LIVE in the house. How do you want to spend your time? How long will you live in this house? If it’s a home you’ll live in for the rest of your life, your wants and needs will be much different than if it’s a home you plan to spend 10 years in while the kids are in school.

Sellers, when you’re getting ready to put your home on the market, consider who is most likely to be attracted to your home. Work with your Realtor to make your home even more appealing to those buyers. Some changes will increase the odds that today’s buyers can picture themselves living in your house, like staging an awkward space by the stairs as a study nook or work space.

And remember, there will almost always be a house for every buyer. It may just take a little (OK, sometimes a lot) more time and/or effort to connect the two!
