Point of pride | Mercer Island sports teams get high academic marks

November 12, 2013 – The Mercer Island High School boys varsity cross country team has been named 3A Academic State Champion for highest grade-point average (GPA) in the sport. The 10-member team had an average GPA of 3.88.

The 61-member girls swim and dive team, with a 3.71 GPA, and 58-member varsity football team, with a 3.36 GPA, were finalists in the statewide competition.

"Taking care of business in the classroom is our student's number one job,” said MIHS Principal Vicki Puckett. “I am so proud of these teams. It is outstanding to have such talented young athletes on the field and in the classroom.”

Girls varsity cross country and soccer and boys tennis and water polo teams earned the Outstanding Team Award with a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0, while the varsity volleyball and boys varsity golf team earned the Distinguished Team Award with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49.

The Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Scholastic Award program is to recognize and reward those teams or groups that maintain a high collective academic standard. It is open to Varsity or Sub-varsity sports teams, activity squads such as Dance & Drill and Cheer squads, and fine arts groups such as bands, choirs, orchestras, dramatic troupes and forensics teams.
