Letter: Preserving the South-End Fire Station Shows Fiscal Restraint

Mercer Island resident and retired architect Jerry Gropp writes in a letter to the editor that preserving the South-end Fire Station protects the legacy of professional, local architects.

As to the now threatened South End Fire Station, the original architect was Roderick G. Parr, 210 Boyd Bldg., Mercer Island. The 1984 expansion and remodel architects were Ridenour & Cochran AIA.

These were all first rate practicing architects, I knew them all. Their work was very professional, undoubtedly restrained a bit by budgets as we were then — and should be now.

Preserving what we have should be important to us — long-timers and those newly arrived.

Lisa- "commenting on one's own letter" is really not so heinous when the intent is to clarify and explain what one has said. Jerry-

I take that as "no deal". Too bad. To your other point, I know folks get to hear a TON of what you think of issues -- usually he same thing over and over and over.....And one should edit before sending letters in, so clarifying not necessary (especially as no one else had posted anything that would necessitate a clarification). But if you did that (edited before sending), it would mean fewer posts which goes against your nature, I can tell. SO I get it, we're stuck with apparently unlimited Jerry posts from now on...good thing there is the Reporter website where you don't (yet) post. I'll be spending more time there.

Jerry has lived on the Island for decades. He's a well-respected architect who knows and is known by large numbers of Islanders. Island issues tend to repeat over the years; long-time Islanders have heard it before and often know the players from previous discussions (as Jerry knew the previous fire station architects). I THINK JERRY HAS EARNED THE RIGHT TO STATE HIS OPINIONS. No Islander is forced to read Jerry's comments. Younger Islanders might do well to carefully consider what Jerry says before they independently make up their own minds. Those Islanders who don't want to consider alternative views, but are satisfied with the official view, can spend their time at the Distorter website.

All are welcome on Mercer Island Patch as contributors and commenters, so long as you abide by the terms of use (http://mercerisland.patch.com/terms). Generally, the terms of use can be boiled down to these three principles: “Keep it clean,” “Don’t try to trick people,” and “Treat others as you’d like to be treated.” Easy, right?

I think EVERYONE (long time resident or not, architect or not) has the right to state his or her opinions (not sure what you mean by earning that right...we have the right of free speech here so everyone has it, earned or not). That really has nothing to do with my point. My point is the VOLUME of posts ...the NUMBER of posts...of course people don't have to read it. I was just trying to HELP Jerry understand that his APPROACH of UNLIMITED posting, AD INFINITUM, is perceived by some (and perhaps LOTS) as counterproductive.
