Texting While Walking: Are You Guilty?

Everyone knows that driving while texting is extremely dangerous, but the Associated Press reports that walking while texting or using smart phones is resulting in injuries and accidents to pedestrians. Do you practice this bad habit?

Texting on a phone while driving is extremely dangerous, walking while texting or using smart phones is not safe either.

The Associated Press (linked to here via the Christian Science Monitor) reports that the practice is resulting in injuries and accidents to pedestrians.

AP also posted on its YouTube channel a surveillance of a man who fell from a train platform onto the tracks below because he was distracted by his phone. Last year, a video of a woman falling into a fountain at a mall while distracted by phone went viral.

Do you think this is an issue in tech-obsessed Bellevue? Do you keep your eyes out for texting walkers while driving or out and about? Where in Bellevue are the worst offenders?

Jeff, what are the top problem spots for this on Mercer Island, in your opinion?

Oh the nanny state must protect. Maybe we can have some lawmakers to make some laws to save us from our terrible demise in the event we engage in this behavior.

We are talking about walking... not driving a vehicle. What is the potential for harm to others if I walk while reading? Would your law also apply to private property? Could I walk around my house and read a book? How many steps are allowed before I violate this law? How is this to be enforced? Regulation is not a substitute for common sense. Adding more rules just makes more violators unless there is a clear and undeniable benefit to the protection of the rights of others.

@Jon: Good point. Jeff has a strong opinion on texting while driving, though, and I'm trying to get a little help on some best candidates for seeing this occur on Mercer Island. So far, no specifics. @Jeff: Could you assist me by giving a handful of specific intersections where you see this happening? I don't have enough time to go to a randomly selected intersection and wait for the evidence. I'm interested in following this up, but I need some help & want to be strategic. Thanks.

Thanks for that, Jeff. Was actually trying to get photos from the park over the west portal but those dang jets were too fast for my puny point-and-shoot. Got Fat Albert, though.
