Congressman Smith, Police Chief Wish Mercer Island a Safe 'Night Out'

US Rep. Adam Smith, Mercer Island Police Chief Ed Holmes and other local officials welcomed dozens of residents to Mercerdale Park for "National Night Out" Aug. 6.

Holmes told residents that knowing their neighbors and neighborhood was an important tool in fighting crime, in particular the elevated rate of burglaries on Mercer Island.

Rep. Smith (D-Bellevue), who made a surprise appearance at the event, told the audience that National Night Out is a "great time to think about crime prevention".

"If you know who's in the neighborhood, then you know who should not be in the neighborhood."

MIPD reported that crime is down overall on Mercer Island, according to 2012 crime stats, but burglaries are abnormally high.
