Fake IRS Return Filed in ID Theft: Mercer Island Police Log

A Mercer Island woman reported that a stranger apparently listed her as a co-filer for an IRS tax return, the Mercer Island Police Department reported.

A Mercer Island woman reported that a stranger apparently listed her as a co-filer for an IRS tax return, the Mercer Island Police Department reported.

A Mercer Island woman who lives in the 7500 block of Southeast 28th Street told police that she received a notice from the IRS on April 8, according to the report. The notice said that there was a problem with her 1040A and requested additional information about her and a co-filer, according to the report.

The woman told police that she had not yet filed her return, and she did not know the person who had listed her as a co-filer, the report said.

When the woman contacted the IRS, the agency advised her to report the identity theft to the Mercer Island Police Department.
