Mercedes Crashes in Street Race: Mercer Island Police Log

A reported car race on West Mercer Way in the early morning hours of May 8 ended with a Mercedes Benz plowing into a mailbox, Mercer Island Police reported.

The driver, a 23-year-old Seattle man, and his passenger, a 19-year-old man from Shoreline, told police that they were racing a in a 2004 Mercedes Benz CLK550 against two other cars down West Mercer Way, according to the police report. The driver lost control of the Mercedes and took out a mailbox in the 5000 block of West Mercer Way. 

The driver told police that the race was organized on a social media site, the Mercer Island Police reported.

The driver estimated that he drove about 70 mph, and the passenger estimated that the car was traveling around 80 to 90 mph, according to the police department. The driver was cited on investigation for racing and malicious mischief 3rd degree.
