Mercer Island Police Blotter: Falling Beer Cans Lead to Underage Drinking Citation

The following information from Aug. 30 - Sept. 14 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction

Responding to complaints of a rowdy party, cited a 17-year-old teen for underage drinking at a Town Center apartment in the late evening hours of Sept. 10.

A witness reported a group of juveniles were drinking alcohol and throwing beer cans from a third-floor apartment at . 

Police contacted the teenage girl at the apartment at 11:04 p.m. and determined she was intoxicated. The suspect's father, however, would not give police permission to enter the apartment. They cited the youth for furnishing alcohol to minors and underage drinking.

Aug. 30

Tubing Accident on Lake Washington 

A 13-year-old boy was injured in a tubing accident on Lake Washington just north of the East Channel Bridge near Mercer Island. The inflatable was bounced over another boat's wake, causing another juvenile to fall on-top of the teenager, causing him back pain. He was taken to Overlake Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Sept. 5

Women's Wetsuit Stolen in Car Prowl

Unknown suspects broke into a Subaru Impreza parked at the south parking lot at Luther Burbank Park sometime between 7-8 p.m. and removed a "Fit2Race" women's black wetsuit. Total damages and losses from the vehicle prowl were estimated at $500.

Sept. 6

California Man Victim of Car Prowler 

A Santa Barbara, Calif. man visiting the Island returned to his parked rental car on the 3600 block of 80th Ave. SE at 4:45 p.m. The Toyota Camry's front side-window was smashed in and the man's Apple laptop stolen from inside, valued at $1,500.

Police Commit Woman to Institution

Police involuntarily committed a 21-year-old Kent woman into the care of medical professionals after she was found by a male friend clutching a 5-inch kitchen knife in his residence on the 6100 block of SE 28th Street. The woman had a history of suicide attempts and was detained at 11:45 p.m. and transported to Swedish Hospital in Seattle for treatment.

Sept. 7

Man Looses Viagra to Maid

A 68-year-old resident of a home on the 4100 block of 78th Avenue SE reported staff from his maid service had stolen his prescription of Viagra sometime last month. The lost prescription was valued at $50.

Tree Climber Taken to Hospital After 20-Foot Fall

Climbing a mature tree on the north end of , a 23-year-old King County man fell 20 feet out of a tree at 2:40 p.m., suffering head and face injuries. He reportedly fell when he was climbing down and a limb broke that was supporting him, and was transported by Mercer Island EMTs to Overlake Hospital. A 17-year-old Mercer Island teenager also climbing the tree stated the pair were climbing the tree "for fun."

Despondent Man Considers Shooting Wife

A 42-year-old resident of a home on 91st Avenue SE was taken into custody at 5:48 a.m. for treatment by mental health professionals after he called a "Crisis Line" service seeking help and told them he was considering shooting his wife.  

Home-Repair Man Stiffs Customer

The homeowner of a residence on the 9800 block of Mercerwood Drive reported the theft of a $400 payment after a home-repair contractor failed to return to repair his home furnace system.

Girl Loses German ID

A 19-year-old resident contacted police at 12:54 p.m. to report her small black leather purse containing a German-issue driver's license, ID card and passport were stolen from her friend's vehicle on the 5600 block of 84th Avenue SE sometime over the last two days.

City Parks Crew Contact 'Crazy' Man

A man "acting very crazy" damaged lumber and park signs in after city employees contacted him while constructing a new trailhead and staircase. Parks staff found the signs "tagged" with brown spray-paint graffiti symbols "FU" and "LEAVE nOW".

Sept. 9

Man Threatens to Kill Cops

A 42-year-old resident on a community supervision program run by the State Department of Corrections made threats against police officers during a 911 call at 8:47 p.m. The man threatened to "kill (police) officers if they showed up at his house on the 6600 block of East Mercer Way.

Sept. 11

License Plate Stolen From Town Center Lot

A 29-year-old resident of a home on the 2700 block of 78th Avenue SE reported the license place was stolen from the front of her Volkswagen Passat sometime during the past week.

Sept. 12

Three Paddleboard Thefts

Three paddleboards were stolen overnight following the race. A Ron House 12-inch paddleboard was stolen from the lawn of a residence on the 2800 block of 60th Avenue SE. The owner said she had put her paddle in a yard shed unlocked and found it but not the board at 8 a.m. Police were unsure if the call was related to an earlier "boat adrift" report received earlier in the morning. The second paddleboard was stolen from a home on the 7600 block of West Mercer Way from the roof rack on a Range Rover. A third paddleboard was stolen from a residence Sept. 13 from a home on the 4000 block on East Mercer Way.

Sept. 13

Four Youths Busted for Drinking, Drugs at 77th Ave Landing

A 21-year-old man was arrested for marijuana possession at the after local residents complained about noise in the park after-hours. Four 21- and 22-year olds were found drinking alcohol at the park and were cited for a civil violation. 

Agitated Porsche Passenger arrested for Obstruction

Police arrested a 24-year-old Mercer Island man at 9:05 p.m. for obstruction during a traffic stop on the 8800 block of SE 40th Street. He repeatedly exited the Porsche 911 he was a passenger in during a traffic stop after he was issued several warnings before he was arrested.

iPhone Stolen from Mercerdale Park Skatepark

Police were unable to locate an iPhone stolen from a 15-year-old skateboarder at after it was reported stolen at 6:35 p.m. The victim left his belongings in a backpack on the grass near the skatepark, saw two suspects walk by his pack and then later discovered the phone was missing. Police later stopped the pair of suspects but were unable to locate the phone.

Sept. 14

Stolen Car located on East Shorewood Drive

Checking the Island for dumped stolen vehicles, police located a Honda Civic registered to a Federal Way man on the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive reported stolen from Auburn. During processing, officers located a IDs and other evidence related to other vehicle prowls in Kirkland and the Eastside.

Local Man arrested for DUI on 93rd Ave

Police arrested a 42-year-old resident for DUI after an initial stop for speeding on the 6800 block of 93rd Avenue SE. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz SUV smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking. He failed several field sobriety tests and a portable breathalyzer test indicated his blood-alcohol levels were twice the legal limit. He was taken into custody and then given a courtesy lift back to his home.
