Mercer Island Police Department Rescues Ducklings From Storm Drain

A brace of ducklings were rescued by Mercer Island police officers using a fishing net near Lakeridge Elementary School.

Police officers were feeling downright ducky after a wildlife rescue last week at Lakeridge Elementary School, according to a City Hall press release.

Mercer Island Police officers responded on June 30 to the Lakeridge Elementary School service road at approximately 8:15 a.m. to investigate a report of ducks down a storm drain.

Sgt. Ryan Parr and Ofc. Robert DeLashmutt located the ducklings approx. 6 feet down inside the drain.

The mama duck was circling the drain and obviously distressed. Sgt. Parr pulled the iron grating and retrieved the ducks using his trusty fishing net to recover 12 little ones in all.

The ducklings were reunited with the mother and they went happily off toward the Lakes neighborhood.
