Mercer Island Police Detective Accidentally Shoots Self in Buttocks

A seven-year veteran with the Mercer Island Police Department was injured by his own weapon on Thursday after handcuffing a narcotics suspect in Shoreline.

A Mercer Island Police detective was taken to Harborview Medical Center after accidentially shooting himself in the buttocks while on duty Thursday morning.

The unidentified narcotics detective had just served a warrant and made an arrest on the 19200 block of Stone Way North in Shoreline and was reholstering his gun when the weapon discharged at 10 a.m.

He was immediately transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where the gunshot wound was described as a minor injury.

"He is doing fine," said MIPD Commander Leslie Burns. "If anything, his pride is damaged as much as his buttock."

The detective was working on assignment with the Eastside Narcotics Task Force, and is a seven-year veteran with the Mercer Island Police Department.

I purposely shot myself in the buttocks once - I can sympathize with the officer, eating donuts while standing up is a hassle

It's certainly relevant, Jerry, when a peace officer is shot — even by himself, accidentally — in the line of duty. It has been several years since a Mercer Island Police Officer has been wounded by gunshot. As for the location of the wound — it's not my editorializing that's conveying the "sorry stuff". Replace the location of the injury for "arm" and you'll see what I mean.
